Brain Tumour Society (Singapore)

In 2003, I was diagnosed with a large Acoustic Neuroma, a benign brain tumor, about the size of a golf ball, which was surgically removed in 2004. The delicate brain operation of 16 hours resulted in double vision and facial palsy which affected my sight, speech and appearance. To regain my normal functions, I embarked on a rehabilitation program which comprised physical exercise and physiotherapy. Although it was a very trying period for me, the wonderful encouragement and support I received from my family and friends empowered me to press on. I have also been keeping myself fit as I realized that health is not to be taken for granted. I love working out at the gym and have participated in various races. Most importantly, I make a conscious effort to spend quality time to appreciate my family and loved ones. I find that this is the beautiful and meaningful core of my life that tends to be crowded out by my busyness with work and other distractions.

Since my recovery, I have been involved in a Brain Tumor Support Group where I have met many friends and families struggling with this difficult condition. Recently, I founded Brain Tumour Society (Singapore) to advocate for the causes of brain tumour patients and caregivers in addition to the befriending and support work that our group has already been offering. If you are a caregiver or a brain tumour patient, and need the support of a befriender, you can connect with us at mgrbtsg@yahoo.com
