Inheritance is what you leave for others; Legacy is what you leave in others.
As a parent, I sometimes feel that it is easier to provide for my children than nurture them. Nurturing takes a lot more time, love, patience and devotion. It is so much easier to just fix their meals, buy them things and see to their day to day comforts than teaching them to be more responsible and considerate of others. As they grow older, they have stronger views and it gets even harder for parents to influence them.
This scenario is all too familiar in my own parenting journey. Over the years, I began to realise that I have to be selective in the issues I engage my teens with. It will be a huge mistake to address every issue of misalignment you have with your loved ones as everyone has a unique personality and it is quite expected that the natural diversity will lead to differences in thinking and doing. Insisting on change and compliance will result in children either rebelling or withdrawing from the family as communication breaks down.
I found that personality profiling yielded very helpful insights to understand dynamics between parents and children. In my own family situation, the Golden Personality Type Profiling (GPTP) and the SOSIE 2nd Generation (SOSIE) Profiling allowed us to identify the points of friction and tension that resulted from the interplay of our different personalities. We started to understand how we can be more understanding towards each other, and at the same time became more conscious our natural tendencies that may exasperate others.
Therefore, apart from helping to explain frustrating relationship issues that seem to replay, coaching with personality profiling by a skilled professional can help the individuals identify personal areas of growth. Through their GPTP and SOSIE profiles, my teens began to understand why they have different effects on different people (thankfully, including their parents) and also became aware of their inborn derailers that could potentially sabotage their future progress and success.
Lastly, I find that personality profiling tools are also very useful in giving young career seekers clearer perspectives of what suit them, in terms of the choice of university studies, as well as the kinds of organizations and job roles, they should take up.
